CONFIGURATION BEFORE QUOTATION · UPDATED

GPU hardware buying guide: choose the right system

Start with the work your GPU must do, then choose the complete system around it. GPUWorld handles enquiries for major-brand and custom GPU servers, workstations, laptops and standalone cards in new, used, refurbished and open-box condition, with purchase, rental and lease options for India and international customers. Availability and terms are confirmed in the written quotation.

Choose a format for your working environment

Compare the hardware format with the intended deployment.
HardwareUseful starting pointCheck before choosing
GPU serverShared compute, AI labs and sustained workloads in a suitable server environment.Rack space, power, cooling, remote access, storage and networking.
GPU workstationA desk-based system for development, visualization, gaming or analysis.Application support, GPU expansion, noise and display connections.
GPU laptopPortable development, demonstrations and work across locations. The exact laptop GPU configuration, memory, power limits and sustained cooling.
Standalone GPU cardAn upgrade to a compatible existing system or a custom build. The host platform, physical fit, electrical connection, power and cooling.

A familiar GPU name does not establish that a laptop, desktop card and server configuration will perform alike. Compare the exact configuration and your application, rather than the name alone.

Match memory, compute and precision to the workload

VRAM holds data used by the GPU. For AI, model weights are only part of the requirement: working data, context, batch size and training state can also consume memory. Leave room for the actual software workload instead of choosing from parameter count alone.

Compute requirements differ between gaming, rendering, model training, inference and financial analysis. Check your software's supported GPU architecture, drivers and numerical formats. FP32, FP16, BF16 and quantized formats involve different accuracy and resource trade-offs; support and useful performance depend on the hardware and software together. Validate reduced precision against your required accuracy.

Request comparisons using your application, data and settings. A peak TFLOPS figure or a larger VRAM capacity does not, by itself, predict end-to-end performance.

Check single-width, double-width and custom chassis compatibility

Single-width and double-width describe physical space occupied around a card. Check card height, length, thickness, adjacent-slot clearance and retention brackets. Double-width does not mean twice the compute performance.

A PCIe slot's physical connector is separate from its electrical lane allocation. An x16-sized connector can be wired for fewer lanes. Confirm the motherboard, riser, PCIe generation, available lanes and CPU configuration for the exact build.

Power checks include the complete system demand, PSU capacity and the correct GPU cables and connectors. Air-cooled active cards have onboard fans; passive cards depend on suitable system airflow. Neither is automatically compatible with every chassis. Confirm airflow direction, fan capability, shrouds, ambient limits and clearance using the platform documentation.

Understand the condition offered

New
Offered as unused; confirm packaging, accessories and the exact supplied configuration.
Used
Previously owned or deployed; request the disclosed condition and history available.
Refurbished
Described as prepared or restored for resale; ask who performed the work and what it included.
Open-box
Packaging has been opened; this alone does not establish prior use, completeness or cosmetic condition.

These labels do not establish a universal testing standard or warranty. Request condition details, included items, any available inspection or test records, and the applicable warranty and return terms in writing.

Compare purchase, rental and lease quotations

Purchase may suit continuing ownership needs; rental can be considered for a defined project; a lease requires agreement on its term and obligations. For gaming, specify games, resolution and display targets. For finance teams, specify the application, numerical accuracy and data controls. AI labs should describe training or inference, model size and expected concurrency.

These enquiries concern physical hardware. Compare the total payable amount, deployment requirements, support scope and end-of-term obligations. For India, include delivery postcode and billing details. For international requests, provide destination country and postcode, currency and import arrangements to be agreed. Pricing, stock, delivery, warranty and commercial terms are confirmed in the written quotation.

Common GPU buying questions

How much VRAM do I need?

Measure or estimate your application's full memory requirement, including working data and overhead. Share model, precision, context and batch details for AI workloads.

Can any GPU fit a custom chassis?

No. Physical clearance, supported slots, lane allocation, power delivery and cooling must all be checked for the exact card and chassis.

Can I add several GPUs and combine their memory?

Multiple cards do not automatically become one shared memory pool. Your application, interconnect and parallelism method determine how the GPUs can work together.

Is refurbished the same as used?

The descriptions differ, but labels alone are insufficient. Ask for the actual condition, refurbishment scope, available records and written terms.

Which brands and configurations can I enquire about?

GPUWorld accepts enquiries across major brands and custom configurations. Submit the exact requirement; a catalogue listing does not confirm stock or compatibility.

Does every system include the same warranty?

Warranty depends on the quoted equipment and terms. Rely on the warranty, condition and commercial terms stated in your written quotation.
